Rheumatoid arthritis (Amavata)

Amavata is the joint disordered which is compared with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Rheumatoid Arthritis RA, is an auto-immune disease that causes chronic inflammation of joints. It may also cause inflammation of the tissues around joints as well as other organs in the body.

Ayurvedic view on Rheumatoid Arthritis

RA, this joint disorder is comparable to vata raktha as explained in Ayurvedic classic texts. This disease is not formed due to one factor, many factors are there which includes – Excess physical and mental activities, including in bitter and astringent foods, lack of activities causes aggravation of vayan vata which causes irregular blood circulation and unwholesome food habits, sedentary life style, habit of sleeping in day time and having excessive sour salty food, causes aggravation of raktha dhatu (blood tissue).

This vitiated raktha dhatu starts vitiating vyana vata and vyana vata in turn aggravate rakta. These vitiated factors spread all over the body and starts pathogenesis in this joints. Vata raktha disease thus manifest in different joints.

Based on the progress of the disease it has two stages.

  1. Initial stage Uthana vata raktha.
  2. Advanced stage called Gambheera vata raktha.

In uthana, twak(skin), and mamsa (muscle tissue) are affected while in Gambheera vata raktha, deeper tissues medas (fat tissue), asthi (bone tissue), majja (marrow) are affected.

Causes Of Rheumatoid Arthritis :

According to Ayurveda the changes inside the body due to above written causes lead to malfunctioning of the immune system.

Apart from above factors, there is genetic factors that make it more likely. One theory is that bacterial or a virus triggers RA in people who have this genetic feature.

In RA, the immune system’s antibodies attack the synovium, which is the smooth lining of a joint. When this happens, pain and inflammation result. Inflammation causes the synovium to thicken. Eventually, if left untreated, it can invade and destroy cartilage. The tendons and ligaments that hold the joint together can also weaken and stretch, the joint eventually loses its shape and configuration.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms

Mainly, smaller joints in fingers, toes and ankles are affected.
Severe pain, swelling and rise in temperature around the affected joint.
The pain and other signs are transitory in nature, that is, only one or two joints are affected at a time and the symptoms shift to the other joints, after some time.
In most cases, the signs are associated with fever and general weakness.
Although visible abnormality in the joint is not seen in the initial stages, gross deformities can be seen at the advanced stage.
